What is Photobiomodulation?
The science behind red light therapy — how specific wavelengths of light stimulate your cells, reduce inflammation and promote healing from the inside out
Red Light Therapy, Explained Clearly
Photobiomodulation (PBM) — also called red light therapy or low-level laser therapy (LLLT) — is a non-invasive treatment that uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to stimulate cellular processes in the body. It is one of the most thoroughly researched complementary therapies available, with over 5,000 peer-reviewed studies and FDA clearance for multiple applications including pain relief, wound healing and hair growth.
Unlike UV radiation which damages DNA and causes sunburn, PBM uses non-ionising light in the 620–1072 nm range that penetrates tissue safely. The light is absorbed by mitochondria — the energy-producing structures inside your cells — triggering a cascade of beneficial biological responses. The result is reduced inflammation, faster tissue repair, improved blood flow and increased cellular energy production.
I've been selling and personally using red light therapy devices in Norway since 2018. Everything on this page is based on the published science — no hype, no exaggeration. If you have questions about any of it, contact me directly.
Understanding Light Wavelengths
The Electromagnetic Spectrum — Therapeutic Wavelengths
Red and near-infrared wavelengths are the therapeutic sweet spot for cellular health
🔴 Red Light (630–680 nm)
Penetration: 8–10 mm into tissue
Best for:
- Skin rejuvenation and anti-ageing
- Collagen and elastin production
- Wound healing and scar reduction
- Surface-level inflammation
- Acne treatment
Mechanism: Visible red light is absorbed by the skin and superficial tissues, stimulating cellular repair and collagen synthesis. See our red light therapy panels.
🟤 Near-Infrared (810–1072 nm)
Penetration: Up to 50 mm (5 cm) into tissue
Best for:
- Deep tissue healing
- Joint pain and arthritis
- Muscle recovery and performance
- Bone healing
- Internal organ support
Mechanism: Invisible NIR light reaches muscles, joints and tendons. Our portable devices are particularly effective for targeted deep tissue treatment.
How Photobiomodulation Works
The Cellular Mechanism
Light Absorption
Red/NIR photons penetrate tissue and are absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase in mitochondria
ATP Production
Mitochondrial efficiency increases, boosting cellular energy (ATP) production by up to 200%
Cellular Response
Enhanced energy triggers cascades: reduced inflammation, increased blood flow, faster repair
Systemic Benefits
Improved cellular function translates to better health, faster healing and reduced pain
Key Biological Mechanisms
- Enhanced Mitochondrial Function: Increases ATP production — the cell's energy currency
- Nitric Oxide Release: Improves blood flow and oxygen delivery to tissues
- Reduced Oxidative Stress: Balances reactive oxygen species (ROS) for optimal cellular function
- Anti-Inflammatory Effects: Modulates cytokines to reduce chronic inflammation
- Stem Cell Activation: Promotes differentiation and proliferation of stem cells
- Collagen Synthesis: Stimulates fibroblasts to produce structural proteins

Notable Research Institutions
Leading PBM research comes from Harvard Medical School, MIT, NASA, the US Military, Mayo Clinic and hundreds of universities worldwide. NASA specifically researched PBM for wound healing and tissue regeneration in space.
PBM vs Other Light Therapies
What PBM Is NOT
- Not UV therapy: No risk of skin cancer or DNA damage
- Not a tanning bed: Causes no pigmentation changes
- Not laser surgery: Non-invasive, no tissue ablation
- Not heat therapy: Works through photochemical, not thermal effects
- Not an infrared sauna: Different mechanism entirely — cellular not thermal
What Makes PBM Unique
- Non-ionising: Completely safe, no radiation risk
- Non-thermal: Works at cellular level, not through heat
- Targeted wavelengths: Precise 630–1072 nm spectrum
- Evidence-based: 5,000+ peer-reviewed studies
- FDA-cleared: Multiple approved therapeutic applications
Dosing: The Biphasic Response
Understanding the Arndt-Schulz Curve
One of the most important concepts in photobiomodulation is the biphasic dose response, also known as hormesis. There is an optimal dose range — too little produces no effect, too much can inhibit cellular function and reverse the benefit.
The Three Dose Zones
- Too Little (Under-dosing): Insufficient photon energy to trigger cellular responses. Minimal or no therapeutic effect.
- Optimal Zone (Sweet Spot): 4–60 J/cm² depending on condition. Maximum therapeutic benefit with full cellular stimulation.
- Too Much (Over-dosing): Excessive energy can inhibit cellular function. Reduced or reversed therapeutic effects — more is not always better.
Personalised Dosing Guidance
Consistency at the right dose beats sporadic high-intensity sessions. When you purchase from LightTherapy.no, I provide a personalised usage booklet with dosing guidance for your specific device and health goals. Use our free dose calculator to find your optimal session time.
