PawWave Duo: Red Light Therapy Pads for Dogs
The PawWave Duo is my first red light device for dogs. It comes as two separate pads, one for the back and one for the chest. Both are wireless and run independently, so you treat only the area that needs it. I tested the fit on my dogs and my parents' dogs before it went into the shop, and I will tell you exactly which sizes work.

How long does a red light session for a dog take?
Fifteen minutes. Put the pad on, switch it on, and stay with your dog until it finishes. If your dog has a diagnosed condition such as arthritis, tell your vet you plan to use it before you start.
PawWave Duo at a glance
The PawWave Duo is a wireless red light therapy set for dogs, sold by Home Light Therapy in Drammen, Norway. It has two pads that clip together and run independently: a back pad (40 x 20cm, 120 triple chip LEDs) and a chest pad (25 x 11cm, 48 triple chip LEDs). Both use 660nm red and 850nm near-infrared light, run for 15 minutes per session, and have built-in batteries that last around 90 minutes and charge by USB-C. In testing it fit a cockapoo and a Springer Spaniel, and it should suit Labrador-sized dogs. It is a wellness device and does not replace veterinary care.

Will it fit your dog?
The back pad measures 40 x 20cm and the chest pad measures 25 x 11cm. I put the pads on my dogs and my parents' dogs and noted what happened.
| Dog | How the pads fit |
|---|---|
| Cockapoo | Fits perfectly |
| Springer Spaniel | Fits perfectly |
| Labrador-sized dogs | Should fit. I have not tried one, but the Great Dane test below puts a Labrador inside the range |
| Great Dane | Close, but not quite |
If your dog is smaller than a cockapoo, or built differently from the dogs above, email me their measurements before you order. I would rather tell you it will not work than have you send it back.
Two pads, three ways to use them
Most dog devices give you one wrap and leave you to move it around. Here the back pad and the chest pad each have their own built-in battery, so you are never tied to a wall socket with a dog under a cable. Four clips join the two pads over your dog and keep them in place. They can sit in front of the shoulders or behind them, whichever suits your dog better.
Back pad on its own
40 x 20cm with 120 triple chip LEDs. Use it when the back is the area you are working on.
Chest pad on its own
25 x 11cm with 48 triple chip LEDs, for the chest and the front of your dog, when that is where the stiffness shows up.
Both together
Run both pads in the same 15 minutes and cover back and chest in one session.
What the research says, and what it does not
Many older dogs slow down with artrose, and leddsmerter often show up first as stiffness when they get up from their bed. Photobiomodulation, which is the proper name for red light therapy, has real veterinary trial data behind it. In a 2018 placebo-controlled trial of 20 dogs with elbow osteoarthritis, 9 of the 11 treated dogs needed less pain medication, against none of the 9 dogs given sham light. A 2022 trial in dogs with hip osteoarthritis found that laser treatment scored better than a course of meloxicam on pain and function at several checkpoints over the first month.
Here is the catch, and I would rather you heard it from me. Both trials used therapeutic lasers in a clinic. This is an LED pad. The principle is the same, light absorbed by the mitochondria in your dog's cells, but the dose is not, and nobody has run a trial on this device. I am not promising you what a vet's laser does. I am offering a gentler home tool, to use alongside your vet's advice.
If you want to see how I read this kind of research, start with my post on what red light therapy actually does, or browse the photobiomodulation research database. Norwegian readers can start at Hva er rødlysterapi?
The two trials above are the Looney 2018 elbow study in the Canadian Veterinary Journal and the Alves 2022 hip study in the American Journal of Veterinary Research. Look them up and read them yourself.
When to talk to your vet first
Red light therapy is generally low risk when it is used properly, but it is not right for every dog. Talk to your vet before you start if your dog has cancer, active bleeding or reduced skin sensation, if she is pregnant, if she is a young puppy, or if she has a diagnosed joint condition.
Keep the light away from your dog's eyes, stay with her for the whole session, and stop if she gets restless or the skin feels warm. Limping, or sudden pain, needs a vet visit. A light pad is not a reason to wait.
How to use it
Settle your dog
A quiet spot and a comfy bed. A calm dog gives you a better session.
Clip it on
Lay the back pad over the back and the chest pad against the chest, then join them with the four clips, in front of or behind the shoulders. Keep them clear of the face and eyes.
15 minutes
Switch it on and stay with your dog until it finishes.
Charge and wipe
Charge each pad by USB-C when the battery runs low. Wipe both pads down after every session.
The batteries are built into the pads and last around 90 minutes, depending on the light intensity, so a full charge covers several 15 minute sessions. The pads have a plastic film surface that wipes clean, and I recommend wiping them after each session to remove the oils from your dog's coat.
Every order comes with a personal protocol from me by email, including how often to repeat sessions.
Your dog is not the only one slowing down
- If you are the one with the stiff knee, a red light panel such as the BioWave Core DeskBuddy covers a larger area than a pad.
- For a single sore spot on you, the 810nm MEGA torch is the one I reach for.
- I wrote about my own joints in what red light therapy actually does, and about whether the skin or the eyes matter for pain in red light therapy for pain.
The whole portable red light collection is worth a look if you want a device that travels with you and the dog.
Dominic's take
I will be straight with you. I tested the fit on my dogs and my parents' dogs. I have not run a clinical trial, and the best published dog data comes from vet lasers, not LED pads. What I can tell you is that this is the same kind of light I have used on my own body most mornings since 2018, that the pads carry CE, FCC, RoHS, LVD and EMC certification, and that having two independent pads means you only treat what needs treating.
Use it alongside your vet's advice, watch how your dog responds, and email me if something does not look right.

Frequently asked questions
What size dogs does the PawWave Duo fit?
The back pad is 40 x 20cm and the chest pad is 25 x 11cm. The set fit a cockapoo and a Springer Spaniel perfectly in testing and was close on a Great Dane, so it should suit Labrador-sized dogs. If your dog is smaller than a cockapoo, email admin@lighttherapy.no with their measurements before ordering.
Can I use the back pad and chest pad at the same time?
Yes. The two PawWave Duo pads are wireless and run independently, so you can use the back pad alone, the chest pad alone, or both together in the same session.
What wavelengths does the PawWave Duo use?
660nm red and 850nm near-infrared, in a 1 to 2 ratio. The back pad has 120 triple chip LEDs and the chest pad has 48. A session lasts 15 minutes.
Is the PawWave Duo wireless and how do I charge it?
Yes. Each pad has a built-in battery that lasts around 90 minutes, depending on light intensity, and charges by USB-C. Two USB-C cables come in the box, and no cable is attached to your dog during a session.
Hjelper rødlysterapi mot leddsmerter og artrose hos hund?
Veterinary trials show photobiomodulation can reduce pain and improve movement in dogs with osteoarthritis, but those trials used therapeutic lasers, not LED pads. No trial has tested this pad. Use it alongside your vet's advice, not instead of it.
Hvor lenge skal en rødlysøkt for hund vare?
15 minutes per session. Stay with your dog until it finishes. Home Light Therapy sends a personal protocol by email with every order that covers how often to repeat sessions.
Er rødlysterapi trygt for hund, og bør jeg snakke med veterinær først?
Red light therapy is generally low risk when used as directed, but talk to your vet first if your dog has cancer, active bleeding or reduced skin sensation, is pregnant, or has a diagnosed joint condition. Keep the light away from the eyes and stay with your dog during every session.
