AfterDark™ — Most Popular Frame
Obsidian Blue Light Blocking Glasses

The boldest, widest frame in the AfterDark range. TR90 flex body, metal-reinforced hinges, CR39 optical lenses. Blocks peripheral light that slimmer frames miss — nothing gets in from the sides.

Why the Obsidian is the one most people end up with

Most blue light blocking glasses leak. Light sneaks in from the sides, over the top, underneath the frame — and that peripheral light still hits the melanopsin cells in your retina. The Obsidian was designed with a wider lens and a closer face fit specifically to solve this. It's the frame Dominic recommends first to anyone who asks where to start, and consistently the one that gets reordered when a lens gets scratched.

"Veldig bra briller. Ingenting blått lys slipper inn og brillene dekker hele øyet."

Frame specifications
Frame material

TR90 thermoplastic polymer — lightweight, flexible, and impact-resistant. Bends under pressure without snapping. Lighter than acetate, more durable than standard polycarbonate.

🔩
Hinges

Metal-reinforced spring hinges — the point where most TR90 frames eventually fail. Allows the temple arms to flex outward slightly for a more comfortable and secure fit across different head widths.

🔴
Lenses

CR39 optical glass — the industry standard for quality eyewear. Significantly lower peripheral distortion than polycarbonate, which matters during 2–3 hours of continuous evening wear.

📐
Coverage

Wider-than-average lens profile sits close to the face. Reduces the gap between frame and skin, cutting peripheral light entry from the sides — the primary reason full-coverage frames outperform narrower alternatives.

Choose your lens — both available in the Obsidian frame
Sundown — Orange 🟠 Early evening 98.5% blue light blocked
Also blocks 95% of cyan light (500–550 nm). Colour perception is shifted but functional — you can cook, watch TV, and have a normal evening. The right choice if you want to wear them from dinner onwards for 2–3 hours.

Start here if you're new to blålysbriller.
⏰ 2–3 hours before bed
Moonlight — Red 🔴 Pre-sleep & summer 99%+ blue & green light blocked
Full 380–550 nm spectrum blocked. Colour perception is significantly altered — everything appears red-tinted. For the final 60–90 minutes before sleep, or for Norwegian summer nights when the sky refuses to go dark.

Essential during midnattsol season.
🌙 Final hour before sleep
Why full coverage matters — the peripheral light problem

The Obsidian's wider frame isn't about style. It's about what happens when a frame doesn't sit close enough to your face:

Obsidian — wider fit
  • Lens edge close to face — minimal gap
  • Peripheral blue light blocked from sides
  • Melanopsin cells protected across the retina
  • Consistent melatonin protection during full evening
  • Less distraction from light leaking at the edges
Narrower/slimmer frames
  • Gap between lens edge and face allows side light in
  • Peripheral retinal cells still receive blue-range light
  • Partial melatonin suppression continues despite the lens
  • Results less consistent — especially in brighter rooms
  • More noticeable light leak in rooms with overhead lighting
🇳🇴 The Obsidian in a Norwegian context

During mørketid: When it's dark outside but you're sitting under LED ceiling lights, the wide Obsidian frame provides significantly better protection than narrower alternatives. Overhead and side-angled LED light sources are exactly where peripheral leakage is worst. Wide coverage solves this.

During midnattsol: If you're in northern Norway in June, the ambient evening light is so strong that even with orange lenses you'll want the Moonlight Red for the final hour. The Obsidian's tight fit means you're not getting stray summer evening light around the edges when it really matters.

The Obsidian is the frame Dominic wears personally and recommends first to Norwegians dealing with both extremes — the endless-light summers and the artificial-light winters. For a complete døgnrytme setup, pair it with amber or red evening lighting in your home. The glasses handle your screens; the bulbs handle everything else.

How to use the Obsidian — evening protocol
Morning
No glasses. Get natural daylight — especially morning sunlight. This anchors your circadian rhythm and makes evening melatonin rise more reliable. Consider morning rødlysterapi alongside.
~19:00
Obsidian Sundown Orange on. From dinner, 2–3 hours before target bedtime. Normal evening — TV, screens, cooking. Melatonin begins rising as it should.
~21:00
Switch to Moonlight Red (optional but recommended). If you're still using screens or your room lighting is bright, the Moonlight lens gives maximum protection in the final wind-down. Particularly important during Norwegian summer.
~22:00+
Sleep. Most people notice faster sleep onset within 3–5 nights. Deeper sleep quality typically improves over 2–4 weeks as the rhythm stabilises.

From Dominic — why the Obsidian is my first recommendation

When someone contacts me and says "just tell me which one to start with," I say Obsidian in Sundown Orange. The wide frame is the main reason — I've had too many people come to me after trying a slim pair that looked great but just didn't cover enough. Light was leaking in from the sides and they weren't getting the results they expected. The Obsidian doesn't have that problem.

It's not the most subtle frame. It's a bit of a statement. But when you're wearing it at home in the evening to actually protect your sleep, that's fine. No one cares what your glasses look like while you're watching TV. And if you want something more discreet for travel or social situations, the Flight or Halo are there for that.

These are the glasses I personally wear most evenings. If you have questions about fit, or whether the Obsidian is right for your situation, just reach out.

Questions about the Obsidian
What makes the Obsidian different from other AfterDark frames?
The Obsidian is the widest frame in the AfterDark range. Its larger lens area and closer fit to the face significantly reduce peripheral light entry — the gap between frame and skin is where most blue light glasses underperform. The TR90 flex body has metal-reinforced hinges (a common failure point on other flex frames), and the CR39 optical lenses cause less peripheral distortion than polycarbonate alternatives. It's the most popular frame in the range and Dominic's first recommendation for most people.
Which lens should I choose for the Obsidian — Sundown Orange or Moonlight Red?
Start with Sundown Orange if you want to wear them from dinner onwards while still seeing colours normally — suitable for TV, screens, cooking, and general evening activities. Choose Moonlight Red if your main priority is the final 60–90 minutes before sleep and maximum melatonin protection. Most people start with Orange. Those in northern Norway or who struggle with sleep during summer often add Moonlight Red later, or order both from the start.
Can I wear the Obsidian over prescription glasses?
The Obsidian has a close-fitting frame profile and is not designed to fit over prescription glasses. For over-prescription-glasses wear, the best option is to contact Dominic directly for guidance. The Obsidian works well with contact lenses. If you need an over-glasses solution, some other frames in the range may be more suitable — Dominic can advise based on your prescription frame size.
How long before I notice better sleep?
Most people fall asleep more easily within 3–5 nights of consistent evening use starting 2–3 hours before bed. Deeper improvements in sleep quality — including longer slow-wave and REM stages — typically develop over 2–4 weeks as the circadian rhythm stabilises. Consistency is more important than occasional perfect timing. Wearing them every evening, even briefly, produces better results than using them irregularly.
Er Obsidian-brillene CE-sertifiserte?
Ja.
