Your body needs melatonin to start rising a few hours before sleep. Blue and cyan wavelengths from screens and LED lights block that signal - telling your brain it is still daytime even at 10pm. AfterDark glasses remove those wavelengths before they reach your eyes each evening, so your melatonin can rise on schedule without any other changes to your routine.

The range covers ten frame styles across TR90 flex, metal and kids profiles. All share the same spectrometer-tested CR39 optical lenses. The choice is about fit and lifestyle - not protection level. Choose the frame you will actually wear every evening.

The science - why this works

The melanopsin-containing retinal ganglion cells in your eyes are maximally sensitive to light between 460-490nm - exactly where blue LEDs and screens peak. Even dim evening light in the blue range is enough to suppress melatonin production by up to 50% and delay its onset by 90 minutes or more. AfterDark lenses physically block that band before it reaches the retina - the equivalent of telling your brain the sun has set, even if you are watching TV under bright LED ceiling lights.

This is why screen filters and Night Shift settings are not sufficient on their own - they reduce some blue light but still allow significant transmission in the 460-490nm band. Physical lenses blocking 98-99% of the relevant spectrum are a different order of magnitude.

Why blålysbriller matter more in Norway
☀️ Midnattsol / Midnight Sun

From June to August the sky never gets properly dark. Even in Drammen and Oslo the evening light at 10pm is still bright enough to suppress melatonin. Moonlight red lenses become essential for sleep through Norwegian summer.

🌑 Mørketid / Polar Night

The trap is assuming glasses do not matter when it is dark outside. Indoor LED lighting emits the same 460-490nm blue peak regardless. You can suppress melatonin just as effectively in January under artificial light as in June. With your circadian system already under stress from the lack of morning light, adding evening suppression makes it significantly worse.

Children's crystalline lenses are clearer than adults', transmitting 40-50% more blue light to the retina. Evening screen time without protection significantly delays their melatonin onset. The Firefly and Starlight frames are sized specifically for smaller faces.

Evening protocol - how to use AfterDark
06:00-18:00
No glasses needed. Get natural light exposure - especially morning sunlight. This anchors your døgnrytme and makes melatonin suppression more predictable in the evening. Consider pairing with morning red light therapy for added circadian support.
18:00-21:00
Sundown Orange on. From dinner onwards, 2-3 hours before your target bedtime. Cook, watch TV, use screens. Melatonin begins rising. Pair with amber or red evening lighting in your home - glasses cover your eyes, amber bulbs cover the rest of your body's light receptors.
21:00-22:00
Switch to Moonlight Red (optional) if you are still on screens or in a brightly lit room. Particularly effective during Norwegian summer when ambient light stays bright well past 10pm.
22:00+
Sleep. Most customers report falling asleep faster within 3-5 nights. Deeper sleep quality improvements typically develop over 2-4 weeks as the circadian rhythm stabilises.

What is the difference between Sundown and Moonlight lenses?
Sundown (orange) blocks 98.5% of blue light and 95% of cyan wavelengths. Colour perception is shifted but functional - good for evenings 2-3 hours before sleep, screens, TV and social settings. Moonlight (red) blocks 99%+ of blue and green light across the full 380-550nm spectrum. Colour perception is significantly altered. Designed for the final 60-90 minutes before sleep, or Norwegian summer nights when daylight extends late.
Which frame should I choose?
TR90 frames (Obsidian, Classic, Ghost, Smooth, Pulse) are flexible memory polymer - lighter, softer, comfortable for extended evening wear, with metal-reinforced hinges. Metal frames (Halo, Arc, Flight, DeepRed Blockout) are more structured and suit people who want a more elevated look. Arc has rubber-tipped arms for a more secure grip during active evenings. Phase Shift is a two-lens magnetic system for day-to-evening coverage in one frame. Meridian is a four-lens system for complete all-day circadian management. Kids frames (Starlight, Firefly) are sized for smaller faces. If you are unsure, ask Dominic.
When should I start wearing them in the evening?
Start Sundown 2-3 hours before your target sleep time - typically from dinner onwards. Switch to Moonlight for the final hour if you want maximum protection. During mørketid, indoor LED lighting is your main exposure source - glasses are equally important even when it is dark outside. During Norwegian summer, consider starting earlier as daylight stays bright very late.
Kan barn bruke blålysbriller?

Do blue light glasses help during Norwegian mørketid?
Yes. During mørketid the issue is not outdoor light - it is the 460-490nm blue peak from indoor LED lighting and screens you are exposed to for 14+ hours a day. Standard LED bulbs still suppress melatonin even in total outdoor darkness. Wearing Sundown lenses from early evening protects your melatonin window regardless of season. In winter your circadian system is already under stress from the lack of morning light - adding evening suppression compounds the problem significantly.
